First beer of the season

It was warm enough today (mid-fifties perhaps) to sit outside on the back steps for a while. They get warmed up by the sun during the early afternoon and are very comfortable by 3 p.m. or so. After 5, I need to move to the side steps, as the sun has switched over there by then.

There really isn’t much to do in the garden at this stage. The bulb watch has begun, and I can see all of the tulip sprouts above ground. There is nothing I can do to forward their progress. I pulled away the old hellebore leaves (and a lot of other old leaves in the front garden, so the bulbs can come up unimpeded). The pond guy is due to open the pond in a week or so. I can’t really plant anything yet and it’s not time to prune the roses. When I get a warm weekend, I may do some clearing and cultivating in the back. If I get to it.

Our patio furniture is still under its coverings (which are themselves weighed down by pools of melted ice), but I’ve always liked sitting on the steps best. Today a little (lost?) cat came and sat with me, and we both basked in the sun.

Did I have another beer after the first one? Or did I switch to something else? Discuss among yourselves.

Nice ending! ...and the kitty, did he/she find her way home? gail
I'm picturing you with a nice Merlot in hand, petting the little cat, enjoying the view of the Hellebores. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.
Beer season is on going here. Actually I didn't know there was a beer season. Now gin and tonic is a summer drink here. Bourbon and sprite is a winter drink but beer is perennial here.

It is beer season here all year around(-: It was in the 70's here today and I am about to go outside and do some more mowing! I will need a couple beers when I am done or a couple advil...(-: I am glad you were able to bask in the sun with the cat!
I'm guessing you switched to the vino, but hey, maybe it's a beer only night. I love the photo of the beer on the front steps.~~Dee

Is that Sam Adams?
I'm a summer beer drinker too...nothing better after a hot sweaty day of gardening!

I like them on warm afternoon, especially after work. It was a Saranac Pale Ale. I had one more, took a nap, and then went to an experimental theater production.

The cat went away, but if I see her again, I'm going to make up some flyers.

Sounds like a delightful afternoon. Happy Spring and Cheers!
I know you. I had assumed the beer was just a starter. It's way too early to do too much in the garden. I'm a glass half empty guy. I fully expect frosts for another month-and-a-half, and a good snowstorm yet. Don't let this spring-like weather lure you into a false sense of sunny security.

Maybe see you tomorrow at Plantasia?

No beer on the step here yet, Eliz, (and it would be Guinness in my case) but I think perhaps a little red wine on the back deck might work this evening. I can hear the snow melting in our yard as we hit about 50 degrees f this afternoon. We might make it yet, those of us who are winter-weary.

Sounds like a wonderful afternoon and evening, glad you got to enjoy them, and the beers.

I had a glass of wine on the patio the evening of our 70something degree day this week (er, last week.) Can't wait for the next day like that. 50's would do just fine too.

I agree, it sounds like a great way to enjoy the afternoon. I know these little tastes of what's to come keep you going until spring really arrives!

Hi Elizabeth, what a nice vision of you and the stray kitty sharing the warming sunshine. Those temps sound pretty good after a hard winter for you. The hellebore looks quite good and the thought of emerging tulips brings a smile. Maybe a nice pinot noir? :-)

I know of "deer season," but hadn't heard of "beer season". Leave it to to GWI to name it.

Aren't hellebores the best? I am just learning about them, have had two clumps for a couple years, and don't think I could get by without them. They are at my front door, I am greeted by them coming and going.

I'd love to sit on your steps and look at the hellebore with you, EAL...we have no steps and no hellebores here. On the other hand, we can use the patio furniture all year.

One New Belgium 1554 Enlightened Black Ale, please!

What? No product placement opportunity with a visible beer bottle label? Girl, it's all about monetizing! Wonderful post, even if you did miss a golden opportunity. Thanks for popping a comment about my Wisteria post. There was a house in LAs Benedict Canyon neighborhood where Wisteria was mixed into a hill for of Algerian ivy. It blended in throughout the year, then burst into lavender delight from a bank of dense ground cover, branches slightly reaching up with nodding clusters of flowers. Superb.

Nice! Spring is definitely here then! I'm with you--the steps are way better for beers and coffees (not at the same time), and this sunny Saturday we got to start end end the day on the porch steps. And Project Bulb Watch begins!

Counting down the days until its mojito season on my patio. I do believe it's always wine season but a mojito takes at least 75 degrees to enjoy. It's gonna be awhile til we see that in Portland. Ah well...

Your BLOG is AWESOME!!! My drink choice is Red Wine - but love a good beer on a hot summers day after gardening.
I am going to mark you in my favorites so I can come back to visit.

Happy Spring!

Now that looks good ~ one of these weeks, I might be able to sit out and have a glass of wine. I'm betting that you went on to have another beer. I would have if I had a cat for company. Maybe you'll have a feline gardening companion this year.

no beer, but I did enjoy my first day in my garden on the 28th of March. you've inspired me to look forward to my next day out there and maybe I'll post a photo of my beer as well...the weather having turned the clock back in recent days!
