Still inside and out


Aha! I thought this was sort of a weird in-between time for my garden. After scanning both this blog and Garden Rant, I see that I barely posted for Bloom Day last April, just flinging up a hellebore image (and those have been blooming for a few weeks).


However, there is more happening than just hellebores, though it’s not terribly exciting. The scilla are multiplying in the front beds, the new hellebores have come up, and some species tulips are starting to show buds. These recently-purchased hellebores are quite dark, and I am relieved to see that I have some double whites and pinks coming in from Plant Delights this year. The plants do very well here; these maroon blooms are more than I got the first year after I planted my white ones.



Inside, the hippeastrum will not go gently into their off-season. I have a white one still blooming and a red one still in bud. And maybe a couple more. If this keeps up, I’ll be able to bring them outside to enliven a late spring gathering.

That maroon bloom is awesome. So beautiful. I believe I've never seen that one before. It's interesting to see different kinds of blooms from different part of the world.

Hi Elizabeth, I think the scilla is quite exciting. In fact, so many of the buds of the bulbs stir the soul more than the flowers, for once they open, we know it is only a short matter of time before they are gone again for another whole year. Buds are like the Carly Simon song, A-n-t-i-c-i-p-a-t-i-o-n. You have no idea how long it took me to type that! HA

You know, this may not be meaningless consolation, but, next month, we in the south will be watching spring melt into summer and you will be enjoying spring! gail

Thanks Gail. I don't need consolation though--I am just describing the garden as I see it today. I have never suffered from zone envy for many many reasons.

Unless you're talking about Hawaii, or something like that ...

I'm digging your double Hellebore! Mine came from Plant Delights last year in bloom, but it's not going to bloom this year. I think it might want to be moved. Spring does seem to take its time getting to your garden.

I have a white Amaryllis blooming also. I guess you are just a bit behind outside up north in snow country. Nice hellebore though and next month....your garden will be full of color.

Wow! Awesome hellebores, Eliz! I am not doing Bloom day these days because I'm not home all week and there's nothing much to report other than what I've posted already. BUT maybe next month. The pink scilla will open in a few days, the blue a few days afterwards, and then things will start to go bananas in a couple weeks time...I hope!

Though we are in the same zone, spring seems to have arrived earlier to my garden... my species tulips are near peak for some, and just beyond for others. Hmmmm...
