FOTD: Poppy envy

It seems like almost every gardener has the conditions to grow these successfully and well, but I've never gotten into poppies. I just don't have an open sunny spot to spare for them. But after visiting Asheville North Carolina for the annual garden bloggers' get-together, I might need to become bitter about this.  I saw beautiful poppies in almost every garden, including a blue variety gardener Christopher Mello had carefully culled and selected to get (below).

They say the best way to do it here in Buffalo is to throw the seeds on the snow in February or so. Maybe next year I'll try.

I love the peony poppies. They are so gorgeous. I throw poppy seeds in everywhere so they squeeze in amongst the perennials. Love them.

I'd love to have poppies too but I don't seem to get the conditions right.

Hi Elizabeth, I love poppies but am not good at growing them. All the pretty colors die out and I am left with the orange Oriental ones. This year I enhanced them with these poppy sways. I'm loving them! Picture here:

Hi Elizabeth, I just wanted to say hello. Those poppies are very nice. I wish I had more sun to try them here.

I had poppy's for the first time this year. And after seeing all those in Asheville, I would have been a bit sad if I had not had them this year. I am going to add more seeds this fall...

I had success with poppy's for the first time ever this year! I hope they open up seeds pods and scatter all over the place as I enjoyed them so...

I've had the same (bad) luck with poppies. I stopped trying. Any I had, and that was years ago, were random and inconsistent.
Doesn't everyone love california poppies? Their bright yellow heads pop up every where and I never have to replant them. Plant them once and have them forever.I live in zone 5, may not work for everyone.
