Bulbs, bulbs, bulbs

Actually I gave a lot of them away. The 56 hyacinths and 5 pots of narcissus (5 others are elsewhere in the house) you see here represent a mere fraction of my 2010 bulb purchases. These will sit here for a while until I move some into my office and scatter others elsewhere in the house. This room used to be one of the darkest rooms in the house, but a couple months back we added 2 windows. It now almost qualifies as a sunroom.

Only a few of the forced bulbs are up, including these Erlicheer from Old House Gardens. The tulips are from the store, but I do have about 30 forced tulips waiting in the root cellar. Things tend to be slow here because the house is chilly.

Nonetheless, it’s a pretty sizeable indoor gardening situation at the GWI property. There is the plant room, where the lemons are getting bigger and yellower, the other houseplants, and of course the bulbs. I have a gorgeous zygocactus in bloom but I hate the way it looks in a flash photo. More to come next GBBD, when the hyacinths are up.

Outside? It’s all white. Pretty, but kind of boring. And cold. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

An impressive collection of bulbs. My six hyacinths, still waiting to be set on their vases, pale in comparison. Thanks for sharing these and inspiring us all to do more to be ready for January...

Great looking collection of bulb. Not everyone has a whole basement they can force them in. How many did you force the very first year you forced some?

I don't remember. I think I've always done quite a few, because I have always used them as gifts.

I should look at old posts to see.

Very nice Elizabeth...It's going to be beautiful in your office when the flower parade begins! gail
Looks great. I'm comparing your paperwhites to mine and I think I don't have the stones high enough around the bulbs and I must not be attending to the water level properly because mine don't have long roots like yours. And, of course, mine aren't blooming yet. You're my indoor bulb role model.
All brown here, but because of you, I have a few bulbs too. They make winter shorter, and it smells good too. Happy Bloom Day.~~Dee
One of my hyacinths is putting out a bud already. I only have three of them though. Your collection of bloomers are sweet. Don't you just love having them during the boring white of winter? Happy GBBD.

You had better spread those indoor bulbs around or you will be intoxicated by the perfume, which really wouldn't be a bad thing...

Great collection of bulbs! I am encouraged to see that your hyacinths' growth is about the same as most of mine, which I had feared were going too slow.
Beautiful! I forgot to put bulbs aside for forcing last fall and I'm sorely regretting it now. This is inspiration for next year!

I have 4 Hyacinths that need to be planted or forced ... yet there they sit in the fridge. Tomorrow, tomorrow ...
I am somewhat regretting not forcing any bulbs this year...yours are lovely!
Wow! Lemons AND Narcissus! Oh to have a sunroom. Thanks for sharing your January color and shoots. We're oversaturated in white here, too.

Which is the sweetest smelling of the Narcissus you've forced? I want fragrance (not stink) as well as beauty.

Good reminder that I really need to buy some hyacinths for my little apartment. I need flowers and brightness in January, now that all the candles and fir of Christmas are gone.

Well you finally convinced me to try forcing next fall. I will have to get your tips then. January is a pretty dull time around my house and its time to change that.

New to Gardening While Intoxicated (although I heard you last May with Sydney Eddison(sp?)on On Point)and Garden Rant. As a Registered Horticultural Therapist I appreciate the "it's all about the process not necessarily the end result" aspect of our gardens. Is you manifesto etched is stone? If not perhaps you could add something about appreciating (loving???) the therapeutic value of gardening. Are you familiar with the American Horticultural Therapy Association, the Therapeutic Landscape Network?
Best regards

Wow - and i thought i had planted a nice early indoor spring bulb garden! I too live in Upstate New York and I too plant bulbs in pots to bring some spring-like scents into my home during the cold winter months. Loved your post! Amazed at all those potted bulbs.

Lovely, I must get some bulbs to add to my indoor winter garden, it's full of herbs and succulents but no blooming lovelies.

Cheers, happy day.
